The Feng Shui practice of using your personalized Kua Life Number comes from the Eight Mansions School of Feng Shui. Used alongside the Bagua Map, your Kua number details your most lucky (auspicious) and 'not so lucky' (inauspicious) directions when it comes to different aspects of your life; such as prosperity, health, relationships and stability. It helps determine optimal balance and placements when it comes to your space and gives great insight into how to best influence your life from an energetic point of view.
So how do I calculate my Feng Shui Kua Number?
Step 1: Convert your birth year to a single digit 'base number' by adding the last 2 digits. If by adding those you end up with a double digit, add those two digits to arrive at a single digit.
example 1: 1931 (3 + 1) = 4
example 2: 1979 (7 + 9) = 16 (1 + 6) = 7
*Please note, birth year calculations are based off the Lunar Calendar's first day of Spring, which marks the beginning of a new horoscope and Kua.
If you were born between January 1 - February 3rd (prior to the lunar spring), you must use the prior year to calculate your Kua.
If you were born on February 4th, you must check the lunar calendar to determine the first day of Spring based on the first day of February that is noted. Insert your year into this link (where the 1979 is) for best results.

If the first day of Spring was on the 4th or before, use the same year of birth. If it is listed as the 5th or after, use the prior year as your birth year.
If you were born on February 5th or after, use your current birth year.
Step 2: Take your base number in consideration with your gender to determine your Kua.
Females born before 2000? - Add 5 to your base number. Remember, if you end up with a double digit, add those two to arrive at a single digit.
example 1: (5 + 4) = 9
example 2: (5 + 7) = 12 (1 + 2) = 3
Females born on/after 2000? - Add 6 to your base number.
example 1: (6 + 4) = 10 (1 + 0) = 1
example 2: (6 + 7) = 13 (1 + 3) = 4
Males born before 2000? - Subtract base number from 10.
example 1: (10 - 4) = 6
example 2: (10 - 7) = 3
Males born on/after 2000? - Subtract base number from 9.
example 1: (9 - 4) = 5
example 2: (9 - 7) = 2
* Please note, the number 5 is considered unlucky and not used in the Eight Mansions Feng Shui Kua numbers and are adjusted according to year/gender.
Males, if you end up with a 5, you are a number 2
Females, if you end up with a 5, you are a number 8
Now that you know your Kua number, you can determine which general direction you belong in:
The EAST group consists of 1,3,4 & 9
The WEST group consists of 2,6,7 & 8
These groups are used to determine your most Auspicious and Inauspicious Directions.
